New campaign targets Kansas drunk drivers through Labor Day

Kansas law enforcement officials are hoping to catch more drunk drivers in an effort to keep them off of the roadways. A federal grant has enabled agencies to conduct more patrols that target drunk driving. A campaign dubbed You Drink You Drive You Lose has started in an effort to deal with this public health and safety issue.

The ultimate goal of the campaign is to reduce the number of drunk driving deaths, which are preventable deaths. Some areas will have around-the-clock enforcement that is targeting drunk drivers. The enforcement will also be targeted at night when drunk driving occurs in greater numbers.

Almost 150 law enforcement agencies in the state will be participating in the campaign. One sheriff notes that juveniles are being caught driving drunk. He wants parents to know that this is a very serious matter that can go beyond the child having to deal with consequences. It is also possible for the parents to have to face criminal charges if they supplied the alcohol to the minor.

While this campaign is certainly a move in the right direction for public safety, it could end up causing problems for the motorists who are accused of drunk driving. License suspensions, fines and court fees that are likely to run more than $1,000, community service, time in jail and education courses are likely on a first DUI conviction. The penalties get harsher from there with a permanent license revocation on a fifth DUI.

Anyone who is charged during the You Drink You Drive You Lose campaign, which lasts through Labor Day weekend, should explore their defense options. Starting as soon as possible is more likely to yield more favorable results.
