Do juveniles have trouble reentering society?

Juveniles who are going through the juvenile justice system are likely worried about what is going to happen to them while they are in the system. For the parents, that same worry is present, but there is another worry that is present. Many parents worry about how their children will reenter society when they are released from the juvenile justice system.

What phases of reentry require intervention for the juvenile?

The entry phase, the placement phase, the transitional phase and the community-based aftercare phase are all phases in which the juvenile should be offered appropriate interventions that will ultimately help him or her to reenter society. Oftentimes, intervention at each stage will require the assistance of more than one program or professional.

What factors should be considered when the juvenile is being prepped for reentry?

There are at least five factors that should be addressed to help the juvenile reenter society. These include:

-- How to have positive experiences with peers and friends, as well as how to avoid negative interactions.

-- How to promote education and avoid conflicts stemming from lack of education support.

-- How to heal relationships with family members and promote positive relationships in the future.

-- How to handle any physical, mental or behavioral issues that should be addressed.

-- How to handle problems with substance abuse, such as going through cessation programs.

Ensuring that a juvenile gets the services that can help him or her is crucial. Without the proper services, recidivism is a very real possibility. Understanding the juvenile justice system and learning how it can help juveniles can help you learn about what services your juvenile might benefit from.
