Criminal DUI charges stem from societal effects of drunk driving

The impacts that drunk driving has on a person who is facing charges for the act can be serious. When you consider some of the statistics related to drunk driving, you can see that drunk driving incidents actually have an impact on just about everyone in the country.

Every 45 minutes, a person is killed by a drunk driver. Around one in three American will be involved in a crash related to drunk driving at some point during their life. The first time an alleged drunk driver is arrested, they have already driven after drinking an average of 87 times.

The cost of drunk driving accidents is another factor that affects society. Just the actual monetary losses can easily reach around $51.1 billion per year. If you add in the estimates for loss of quality of life, you can add another $63.2 billion to that total. That doesn't even include the loss of life for people who are killed in these accidents.

Because of the effects of drunk driving, all 50 states, including Kansas, have laws on the books to curb drunk driving. This includes setting criminal penalties for people who consume alcohol before they turn 21 years old, as well as those who drive after drinking. For drivers who can legally drink, having a blood-alcohol concentration of .08 percent or greater is what can lead to drunk driving charges.

The fact of the matter is that drunk driving has a huge effect on society as a whole. For that reason, avoiding drunk driving is always a good idea. If you are accused of drinking and driving, presenting a defense against the charges must become your top priority.
