Drug shipped through post office leads to federal drug charges

Packages that are sent through the United States Postal Service are sometimes sent with tracking numbers so that recipients of packages know when to expect items to be delivered. A recent case out of Kansas City shows that not all items that come through the USPS are actually delivered to the stated address when they are marked as delivered.

One postal carrier in Kansas City is now facing federal charges related to a series of deliveries that were actually fraudulent. The postal carrier is accused of being part of a conspiracy to distribute PCP that was packaged in Welch's grape juice bottles. Those bottles of PCP were mailed from a man in Victorville, CA, to Kansas City.

The delivery address was on the postal carrier's route. Instead of delivering the packages to the appropriate delivery address, the postal worker is accused of marking items as delivered and then diverting the packages to other recipients.

All told, there were five deliveries that were considered suspicious. A total of 15 packages were shipped using a cash payment. Each of those packages weighed more than 10 pounds.

Surveillance was conducted as part of the investigation into the matter. When the postal worker noticed that she was being followed, she returned to the post office. At that point, federal agents were able to open the packages that the carrier was holding. They discovered PCP-filled bottles.

The postal carrier and the shipper from California have both been charged with federal charges. They should now get to work on a defense against these federal criminal charges.
