Call from motorist leads to 7-pound crystal meth bust in Kansas

McPherson, Kansas, police likely didn't know what to expect when they responded to a call made by a motorist as 2014 neared its end. According to the McPherson County Sheriff Larry Powell, a driver contacted the authorities complaining about a vehicle driving without its lights and following closely behind other vehicles on the road.

The police responded and pulled over an 18-year-old male driver on I-135. Law enforcement personnel reportedly discovered seven pounds of crystal meth in the vehicle during the traffic stop. McPherson police took the 18-year-old into custody on charges of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, according to a news report published on The incident occurred the week before the New Year dawned and an arrest was made on Monday.

The report also states that the defendant is currently in the McPherson County Jail on a bond set at $30,000. Sheriff Powell said that he had never seen a bust quite this large and stated that it was a lot of meth to get off of the streets. The sheriff reported that deputies found seven separate packages of meth in the vehicle, but declined to state specifics. He also indicated that the vehicle had an additional occupant who was not arrested at the time of the incident.

This arrest highlights the many ways law enforcement officials are alerted to the presence of illicit drugs like crystal meth. It is proof that along with careful investigation, police rely on every day citizens to alert the authorities about wrongdoing. Defendants arrested for meth and other crime involving drugs may benefit greatly from seeking legal representation as soon as possible.
