Pair accused of methamphetamine crimes across from school

An enormous drug bust in Kansas City has led to a $2 million haul for area officers. Authorities say that a 20-year-old man and his 23-year-old associate have been charged with second-degree drug trafficking in connection with the identification of the methamphetamine cache. Those charges are considered class A felonies under the law in Missouri, where the official arrest took place.

Officers say that the younger man hails from Kansas City, while the other is a California native. The pair was arrested after authorities received a tip several months ago indicating that the two men were involved in drug-related activity. A subsequent investigation was conducted, and officers were able to obtain a search warrant for the men's home. A concerned citizen's information ultimately led to authorities identifying a massive amount of methamphetamine in the suburban home.

Investigators say they allegedly found most of the drugs inside the defendants' vehicle, where the substances were hidden inside the bumper, fender and dashboard. To make matters worse, the drug trafficking activity occurred across the street from an area school. As a result, the men could face elevated charges because they allegedly possessed and trafficked drugs in a school zone.

The men's bond was slated to be set at $100,000. It is not yet clear whether that amount has been formally determined. The men were arrested on May 13 after officers executed a search warrant.

Criminal defendants who are accused of dealing drugs in a school zone could face significantly higher penalties than those who engage in these activities elsewhere. Laws are designed to protect children and other vulnerable parties from the influence of those accused of drug possession. A Kansas attorney may be able to explain more about the implications of additional penalties because of drug crimes committed in such an area.
