Defendant held on $5M bond for pending homicide charges

A Kansas man is being held in connection with the gruesome murder of a 29-year-old woman and her three children on Nov. 25. The man, age 22, was found walking down the street in nearby Independence. He was spotted by police officers during the evening hours on Nov. 26, according to authorities, as he walked just blocks from the hospital. The defendant was reportedly walking in freezing weather, and he had nearly become hypothermic because of the outdoor conditions. Independence is about 30 miles away from the home at which the four victims were found.

Officials have set a $5 million bond in the case. Prosecutors will be permitted to wait until Dec. 10 to file official homicide charges against the man in connection with the case. Among the four victims were three children, ages 9, 6 and 4.

Authorities had initially located the man at about noon on Tuesday, as he was seen at a retail establishment in west Independence. Prior to that, he was believed to have been hiding in the woods west of town, having abandoned his vehicle. A tipster clued law enforcement officers into the man's location about 8 hours later; police dogs and a helicopter were used in the man's capture and arrest. It does not appear that the man has any previous criminal charges, excluding some minor traffic violations.

Friends of the victim said that the man and woman had gone on a few dates, but the woman had broken off the relationship months ago. Still, the man may have been stalking the woman, as her sister says he sent threatening text messages and used other intimidating tactics.

Even though the man in this case may be charged with the deaths of four people, he deserves a criminal proceeding that is fair and unbiased. A criminal defense attorney can help protect this man's rights, allowing him to be treated without prejudice from arraignment through sentencing. Criminal defense attorneys can be important allies for those facing homicide charges.
