Kansas men arrested after drug robbery gone awry

Three Kansas men were taken into custody on June 13 in connection with a robbery near a McDonald's restaurant in Lawrence. The trio, which hails from Topeka, was allegedly involved in the drug-related robbery that occurred two weeks prior. Now, four defendants are in custody in connection with the robbery, with two already mounting their criminal defense in court.

Authorities also arrested a 30-year-old man about one week after the incident. He has been charged with attempting to buy synthetic marijuana. Officers report the man called in to report the incident at about 3 p.m. on June 1, when a shot was reportedly fired in the parking lot of the restaurant. Investigators still have not located a gun and the injury the man suffered to his hand was not a gunshot as the man reported.

One of the four defendants is on parole already, having been convicted in 2008 for the slaying of another man in Topeka. He was paroled in 2012 after serving three years for involuntary manslaughter. Another of the men is facing aggravated assault charges, along with criminal possession of a firearm, unlawfully seizing a vehicle and attempting to purchase synthetic marijuana. Several of those counts are felonies. Another recently arrested man faces charges of possession with intent to distribute synthetic pot and could face up to 17 years' prison time. The fourth defendant is still awaiting formal charges in connection with the case.

These men could all benefit from the advice of a qualified criminal defense attorney. These lawyers can help them decide which pleas to enter, how to negotiate with prosecutors and how to approach other aspects of their case. Your criminal defense attorney can help you learn more about your legal rights and responsibilities from arrest to sentencing and beyond. If you are facing drug-related charges, consider seeking the assistance of a qualified defense lawyer to help you through this difficult time.
