High school teacher arrested for alleged threats

A 39-year-old Kansas high school teacher is facing felony charges in connection with two alleged criminal threats. The man is accused of making disturbing comments to school administrators during a sports event on May 21.

Authorities and school administrators report the social studies and physical education teacher was taken into custody after making threatening comments about school violence. These comments supposedly involved threats toward at least two school administrators. District police and law enforcement officers took over the case, and the investigation is ongoing. Officers reportedly searched a building at Maize High School, but no threat was identified. The man is currently being held in the local jail on a $250,000 bond. He is being held under suspicion of criminal threat, a felony offense.

The school district is conducting its own investigation separate from authorities, although administrators have been tight-lipped so far about their findings. It appears unlikely the man will be permitted to return to his teaching position for the final days of the school year. Investigators from both the school and police department are continuing to gather information about the case.

Threats of school violence are taken very seriously in modern society, considering the increased incidence of school shootings and other fatalities on campuses. As a result, authorities and school administrators may be prone to act in situations that would not have been noticed in previous years. This means teachers are subjected to an ever-rising level of scrutiny through comments they make both at school and during their personal time.

The man in this case is not automatically guilty because he has been charged, though news media and other sources may choose to spin the story. The fact remains the man could mount a successful criminal defense against the charges. If you are facing similar criminal charges, consider seeking the assistance of a qualified criminal defense attorney, who can help you learn more about your rights and responsibilities in the courtroom.
