Teens accused of massive damage at Menard's store

They say that boys will be boys, but sometimes teenage antics can lead to serious juvenile crime consequences. Four youngsters have been arrested in connection with a vandalism incident in Garden City, Kan., near Wichita. The four boys are accused of causing massive damage when they sneaked into a local Menard's store after hours through an unlocked door. Authorities report that the boys spilled paint and damaged equipment, among other allegations.

The group had reportedly been riding bikes throughout the town before ending up at the home improvement retail store. They entered the store through an unsecure outside door during the late-night hours of Feb. 2, according to an official's report. From there, the boys began to ride forklifts throughout the store. They reportedly spilled 86 five-gallon containers of paint and 11 one-gallon bins. The paint is responsible for 25,000 square feet of damage, which may cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair. Other damage inside the store was incurred by forklifts and other items. Authorities report that the boys may have also lit cardboard boxes on fire inside the store. Additionally, support beams for the roof were damaged; those may require replacement to ensure the building's safety.

The boys, ages 13 to 17, are being held in the Southwest Kansas Juvenile Detention Center. They are facing felony charges of burglary, criminal damage to property, arson and conspiracy, according to local media reports. The boys have not been scheduled to appear at any upcoming hearings.

In this case, it is possible that the younger boys may have been influenced by the older teen. The 17-year-old boy, who is close to adulthood, could have persuaded the younger teens to participate in the vandalism with him. Because of his age, he could face more serious consequences. However, as all of the teenagers involved in this alleged act of vandalism face charges, they could all face serious consequences for their alleged actions. These young teenagers have all of their high school years ahead of them and could mature into more responsible young adults during this time. Since juvenile charges can impact a teenager's future, it is important to have a strong defense attorney knowledgeable about how the juvenile criminal justice system works on one's side.
