Third man sentenced in Kansas City Brinks armed robbery

A third man has been sentenced in connection with the robbery of a Brinks security truck. In the incident, three young men fled with money intended for an ATM at the Bank of America branch on Main Street in Kansas City. The third man, 22, is expected to spend more than 13 years in federal prison because of his involvement in the crime.

The man has also been ordered to repay the nearly $80,000 he took during the armed robbery. He pleaded guilty to three charges of armed robbery. The man's two confederates, also both 22 years old, received prison terms of 14 years and five years, according to court records.

The three men reportedly held the two-man Brinks crew at gunpoint as they made off with more than $130,000 in $20 bills. The men used some of their newfound wealth to visit Worlds of Fun, and one of the men purchased a Dodge Charger. Officers found bags and pillowcases stuffed with wads of cash when they searched the men's homes, according to incident reports.

All of the accused men pleaded guilty to their crimes, most likely due to the massive volume of evidence acquired by police investigators. The men's attorneys may have advised them to take a guilty plea because the outcome of a jury trial would simply be too uncertain. If convicted by a jury, the men would have faced far more severe punishment than that meted out after the guilty plea. Lawyers sometimes advise their clients to submit to a guilty plea in order to reduce the overall sentence. Two of the men said they had also robbed a bank and a family-style restaurant during the summer months of 2009 and 2010.

The crime is considered a felony because of the large amount of money stolen. The fact that the men were also brandishing weapons escalates the crime into a more serious category as well.
