KC boy's death ruled homicide

Investigators examining the death of a 5-month-old boy in March have ruled the child's death a homicide, according to forensic staff in Kansas City. The news came after prosecutors had already charged a suspect in connection with the case. The suspect, a 42-year-old man, is mounting a criminal defense against charges of endangering the welfare of a child and first-degree assault. Now, it appears that the man will also be facing homicide charges in connection with the incident.

Court records show that the boy had suffered severe head trauma while in the care of the man, who is the boy's grandmother's boyfriend. He told police that he had been the boy's sole caretaker at the time of the injuries, but he had a difficult time keeping his story straight when questioned about the boy's wounds.

Sadly, the man has already served four years in prison in connection with the 1997 death of his 9-week-old daughter. In that case, the child's mother was sentenced to 20 years in prison for abuse, but the man was charged because he failed to stop the physical assaults.

In the case of the 5-month-old, it appears that police have a significant amount of evidence both from the scene and from the defendant himself. Statements he submitted to the police could prove incriminating, especially since he has admitted that he was alone with the child immediately before the young boy died.

Seeking the aid of a criminal defense attorney in the early stages of an investigation can be pivotal for a defendant. In this particular case, enlisting the help of an attorney is essential not only because of the defendant's criminal history but also because of the severity of the charges at hand.
