Pittsburg residents face long list of drug charges

Two residents of Pittsburg have been arrested on suspicion of committing several drug crimes in the presence of children. The suspects were taken into custody on July 10, and they remain in the Crawford County Jail, according to media sources. Reports about their bail amount have not yet surfaced.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation's Southeast Kansas Drug Enforcement Task Force had executed a search warrant at the couple's home during the early afternoon hours on July 10. Two adults and three children, ages 9, 5 and 2, were found inside the house while officers conducted their search. During the search, officers discovered the presence of toxic fumes related to the drug use, and the local fire department was contacted to assist with the hazardous materials.

After the search, the children were put into protective police custody, according to officers. Emergency responders checked the children for health problems related to the suspected drug use in their home, but it was unclear whether the youngsters were ill.

The couple, ages 25 and 27, have been charged with a laundry list of crimes, including aggravated child endangerment, possession of marijuana, possession of misdemeanor drug paraphernalia and abuse of toxic vapors. It is not clear what substance produced the toxic vapors in question, as marijuana alone does not produce overly hazardous smoke. Furthermore, officials have not yet said how much jail time the pair faces if convicted of the crimes in question.

Officials did not say whether the bust was part of a larger operation, or if the execution of the search warrant was an isolated incident. It is also not clear how much marijuana the couple is accused of stashing. It would appear that these suspects are simply recreational drug users who had the unfortunate luck of getting caught. There was no indication that the couple was growing or distributing marijuana. They are simply accused of using the illegal substance.
