Protective orders aren't always fair

When someone takes out a protective order against you, it may not be very fair or just, and it could seriously impact your ability to live a normal life. If it's too inhibitive, you may want to fight the order right from the moment that it's handed down.

For example, what if the order makes it impossible for you to go to work since the person who took it out is also employed at the same place? The order may only be intended to keep you from going to that person's home, but the unintended consequence could be that your employment has to be cut off, as well.

Clearly, this is a violation of your basic rights. If you can't work, your career could be put on hold or entirely ended. You could lose the ability to pay rent, put food on the table, and care for your family. You could be forced into bankruptcy, and you could lose all that you've worked so hard for over the years. A protective order is not meant to do any of these things.

This is important because a Protection from Abuse Order—most often known as a PFA—is not a short-term arrangement. It lasts for an entire 12 months. Often, the best way to fight it is right at the beginning, as soon as you learn about it and see just how detrimental it's going to be.
