People who must register on the sex offenders list in Kansas

When accused of a sex crime, it is important to know how the accusation and a possible conviction will impact your rights. This is best done before the case even goes to trial. It is also important for those who have served their time to know how their rights and obligations have changed so that they know what they are legally required to do. For example, they may be asked to register on the official Kansas sex offenders registry.

First and foremost, it should be known that anyone whose conviction falls under KSA 22-4902 has no choice but to register. This is the basic law dealing with sex offenders in the state, and it offers explanations of these crimes and related terms.

Next, it is important to note that this law pertains to adults, or those who are over the age of 18.

Now, if the conviction did not take place in Kansas, a person living in the state may still be required to add his or her name to the registry. They need to do so if they were convicted in a similar state court in another state for crimes that, in Kansas, would fall under the aforementioned KSA 22-4902. They will also need to register if they were convicted in a federal court, a military court, tribal court or even a foreign court.

In some cases, those under the age of 18 may be told that they do not have to register if the court sees fit, even though it is required for adults. In cases where the court does not make this distinction, though, minors are also required to register for a sex crime.
