Man charged with sex crimes in beating, rape

A man has been officially charged in connection with a brutal beating and rape that occurred at a local park in Independence. The incident apparently occurred in Kansas’ neighboring state of Missouri The defendant allegedly struck the woman in the face so severely that she lost consciousness before he commited the sex crimes. The man has been formally charged with first-degree sodomy and first-degree rape in the matter.

Authorities say that the defendant and victim were allegedly identified by two workers who were removing trash from a fast-food restaurant. They called the police when they noticed that two people were having sex near the establishment – and that one of the individuals was covered in blood. The victim was found in a grassy area nearby.

This is not the defendant’s first time facing allegations in criminal court. Although it does not appear that the man has previous convictions for sex crimes, he does have a criminal past that includes drug possession, theft and burglary, among other violations. He was released from custody in June 2012, according to official reports.

The defendant has reportedly struggled with homelessness, according to representatives from local charitable organizations.

Such defendants who have a dense criminal record may have special needs in a criminal courtroom. Those with repeat violations may have to engage a different defense strategy when compared to those who are accused of first-time violations. It is important to remember that even though the man is accused of committing the sex crimes, he is not considered guilty just because he was arrested. No matter how heinous the alleged crimes, each criminal defendant still deserves an unbiased legal proceeding in which their rights are protected.
