2 teen boys detained, facing sex assault allegations

Six employees have been suspended from a Kansas City school at which an autistic girl was reportedly sexually assaulted by a teenage boy. The workers were allegedly suspended from their jobs after additional information about the incident emerged, prompting the initiation of an internal investigation. The 14-year-old boy who supposedly raped the girl multiple times during the past month was charged with rape and sodomy on April 2. A 13-year-old boy who served as a "lookout" during the incidents is facing the same charges. Both of those teens are being held, though it is not clear whether they are in a juvenile detention center or another local facility.

The allegations come in the wake of a similar previous incident at the school, during which a 17-year-old girl alleged that she was dragged up a flight of stairs before being raped. That incident had ostensibly prompted officials to boost security measures throughout the facility in an effort to prevent such an assault from occurring again. Those changes included safety reviews, restricted access to certain buildings and additional adult supervision for children, according to news reports.

Now, the most recent victim is alleging that she was assaulted in an area that was not outfitted with security cameras. School representatives say that security measures should have been in place at the time of the most recent incident. It is not clear whether any evidence exists to actually place the boys at the scene of the alleged rape.

Young criminal defendants such as these boys may have special needs in a criminal courtroom. Those facing sex crimes allegations at such a young age may benefit from the assistance of a Kansas criminal defense attorney. These professionals may provide defendants and their relatives with more information about their legal options and rights, allowing them to make the most educated decisions during the criminal proceedings.
