Man charged with marijuana crimes after unrelated search

A 26-year-old Kansas man is facing serious criminal charges after another defendant was arrested inside his home. Authorities who were looking for a 24-year-old man who was accused of armed robbery and a parole violation. They found that younger individual at the older man's home -- but they also allegedly found much more than they bargained for. Now, the older man is accused of attempting to produce marijuana in a home with a child present, along with allegations of unlawful use of drug paraphernalia.

Official reports show that the arresting officers discovered a significant amount of marijuana, along with firearms and ammunition in the home. All of those items were reportedly in plain view for officers, who had asked the homeowner if they could search the premises. Authorities say that they also found materials that may have been intended for a marijuana growing operation; that equipment included hoses, plant food and heat lamps. This discovery comes weeks after an incident in which a vacant garage burned to the ground on the man's property.

Court documents show that the man admitted to intending to grow marijuana, but he contends that he told police that he was wanting to cultivate tomatoes. Further, it appears that the defendant plans to bring a lawsuit against the police department. He said that his home was illegally searched, and he has the home surveillance tapes to prove that assertion.

Criminal defendants who are unsure whether officers violated legal protocol during a home search may benefit from the advice of a criminal defense attorney in Kansas. These professionals may examine the police action, helping clients protect their rights throughout the legal process. An attorney can be a valuable asset and ally in a Kansas courtroom.
