Teen accused of assault nabbed in Kansas

A teen girl from nearby Nebraska who is accused of assault after an attack on a fellow high school student has been apprehended by Kansas police on Oct. 8. The young woman, age 16, is accused of injuring a senior at her school. That girl was treated at a local hospital for cuts to her face and hands, and she also suffered several blows to the head.

The teen's behavior appeared to be uncharacteristic of her personality, according to friends and close family members. The victim's family is advocating for leniency in the case, as it is not clear why the young woman may have acted out in such a fashion. The girl had no history of trouble at the school, nor did she have a criminal record.

Authorities report they were responding to a call for someone claiming to have had car trouble. Officers encountered the young woman on their way to that call. She has formally been charged with first-degree assault and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. The teen is currently being held at a Kansas detention facility, pending extradition to Nebraska for further legal proceedings.

Official reports show that the victim in this case had just left a counselor's office at school when she stepped into a restroom and was attacked. The teen is accused of using a knife and a hammer to accost the victim, swinging the weapons wildly without explanation. A staff member came to the victim's aid, at which time the defendant ran into a waiting getaway car. It is still not clear why the teen attacked the other student, as there does not appear to have been any social relationship between the two.

Defendants in such cases deserve a fair court proceeding. It appears that this young woman may have had some kind of behavioral emergency that caused her to attack another student. These factors must be considered by judges and attorneys throughout the entire proceeding in order to guarantee a fair evaluation of the charges.
