Woman accused of assaulting teacher at school

A 24-year-old woman is facing charges for criminal activity after she allegedly beat her child's kindergarten teacher in early September. The woman is accused of yanking the 49-year-old woman from her chair by her hair, striking her repeatedly in the face and slamming her head into a file cabinet at Truman Elementary School. The incident happened at about 6 p.m. on Sept. 5, according to official reports.

Authorities say the woman became enraged after her 6-year-old son said his teacher had scratched his neck while disciplining him earlier in the week. She called the school to inform administrators that she intended to come over to discuss the incident. Even though the principal instructed the woman not to visit the school, she arrived and darted into the teacher's classroom before other personnel could restrain her. The teacher was reportedly on the phone when the parent entered the room and accosted her.

The principal had rallied other staff members to confront the woman in the teacher's class, but they arrived about 30 seconds after the defendant entered the room. Reports show that the assault was already over, with the woman punching the teacher in the face five to 10 times. The teacher suffered bruising to her face, but she did not incur any other injuries, according to hospital records. Officials at the school say they intend to prosecute the matter, but the mother was not immediately located. She has been issued a ticket for assault with a court date for late October.

The boy later told his father that his teacher had not harmed him. An investigation into that matter is ongoing.

The woman was understandably upset about the possibility that her child's teacher had harmed her son. In addition, the woman has not yet been proven guilty in the case, having only received a citation and a court date. She should receive all relevant legal protection afforded to any other defendant in her situation.
