Recruiter convicted of sex crimes against teen

A 38-year-old former Army recruiter has been convicted of sexual assault after supposedly having sex with a 15-year-old girl. The Kansas City man was charged with statutory rape and sodomy. The alleged victim said she was acquainted with the man because he had worked as a recruiter at her high school. He faces up to 14 years' prison time in connection with the offenses. The sentencing hearing is currently scheduled for Oct. 4.

Throughout the trial, the man denied he had sexual contact with the alleged victim, saying instead that he was forced to fend off her advances. Still, the man's DNA was found on the girl's clothing, a fact that was not fully explained by the defense.

Authorities report the incident in question occurred on Oct. 17, 2009, when the pair met up after she sneaked out of her home. They had met during an encounter at the movie theater, during which they exchanged phone numbers and began to communicate with each other. The man reportedly had sex with the girl in both his vehicle and his apartment. When the girl's parents discovered she had gone, they began calling her friends and unknown phone numbers in her contacts list.

The defendant had initially denied knowing the girl when he talked to her parents. He then contacted the family again, arguing he was a moral man who did not hurt their daughter. The girl reported the alleged assault after returning home from the excursion.
