Topeka men held in connection with home invasion

Two men from Topeka, Kansas, remain in custody at this time after being tied to a shooting that left a victim critically injured. The pair were booked into the Shawnee County Jail on July 24 after being arrested on suspicion of the violent crimes.

Authorities report the two defendants, ages 18 and 21, are accused of multiple serious crimes including aggravated burglary, aggravated battery and aggravated robbery. One of the men also suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound shortly before being arrested and booked during the early morning hours. Even though he was wounded, he was still able to be taken into custody. He was being treated for his injuries at a local hospital. Interestingly, the older defendant, who was also the victim of the gunshot wound, had been adjudicated for involuntary manslaughter several years ago, while still a juvenile.

In this case, the younger man's bond was set at $150,000, while the older man is being held on a $250,000 bond. If they are able to post bond, they will be free until a hearing in October; if not, then they will appear in court in about two weeks' time.

Officers conducted a thorough search of the housing complex where the shooting reportedly occurred. The two defendants were identified and tracked down in a mobile home park on foot by police officers who responded quickly to the scene. The defendant with the gunshot wound reportedly was injured before police involvement in the incident. Little information has appeared in news reports about the apparent victim of the home invasion and shooting.

In this case, the defendants would be wise to seek legal counsel to understand more about their options and responsibilities. One of the defendants has already been through many of the same legal proceedings as a juvenile, although it is important to remember that adult procedures can be remarkably different. As a result, both men would benefit from the assistance of a qualified criminal defense attorney who could help them develop a strategy for their individual legal situations.
