California man charged with shooting Kansas City minister

Charges have been filed in connection with the shooting death of an area minister. The charges for the violent crimes have been filed against a 37-year-old California man who is accused of shooting the 58-year-old victim as he helped a friend move. That man is facing second-degree murder charges in connection with the incident.

Authorities report the alleged victim pulled into a parking lot behind the defendant at about 3 p.m. on June 29. The minister was helping his friend move out of the house, and he was reportedly talking with the driver of the other vehicle about collecting items that had been for sale at the home. As the two men talked, the passenger in the first vehicle got out of the car, brandishing a gun. Witnesses heard a single gunshot. Some reportedly saw the defendant running from the scene. Some eyewitnesses said the minister appeared to be disgruntled, but there is no evidence he made the first move in the altercation.

Officers arrested the man shortly after the alleged shooting. He was found with a .38-caliber handgun on his person, and he was sweating profusely. The minister died at the scene.

Family members say the victim was a friendly, helpful person with multiple degrees in counseling psychology. The minister also served as a therapist for some of his congregants, and he was reportedly very talented at de-escalating conflicts.

It is not yet clear whether officers have actual physical evidence linking the defendant to the scene. News reports do not definitively state the gun held by the man was actually used in the shooting. In this case, the defendant would be wise to recruit the services of a qualified criminal defense attorney.

A defense attorney is useful in your criminal case because he or she can help you understand more about the charges you are facing. This can allow you to make informed decisions about pleas and other important choices. Trust your qualified defense attorney to help you through your criminal case from arraignment to sentencing and beyond.
