Kansas doctor denied bail for drug charges

A physician from northeast Kansas has been denied bail in connection with a series of drug charges. Prosecutors argued the doctor would be a flight risk, primarily because of his access to a massive amount of liquid assets and passports. The 53-year-old physician was indicted on May 1 on charges he illegally distributed prescription drugs in Manhattan, Kansas.

The indictment shows the man is charged with conspiracy to illegally distribute, along with drug distribution and unlawfully distributing drugs to a person younger than 21. The man could be required to serve prison time, but he could also face forfeiture of many assets acquired as a result of the alleged illegal activities.

Charges show the man is accused of improperly prescribing medication from April 2007 until August 2012. He reportedly left blank prescription pads with his staff, directing them to write prescriptions while he traveled. None of the staff members were qualified to write the prescriptions. He had been traveling abroad about two months before the charges were filed.

Prosecutors allege the man and his wife hid assets during inquiries after the charges were filed. They also attempted to mislead the courts about the whereabouts of their passports, according to information from the recent bond hearing. More than $1 million had recently been transferred from a Swiss bank for the purchase of land overseas, for example, in a potential bid to prevent authorities from accessing the couple's assets.

The physician is reportedly a Russian political refugee who succeeded in the American capitalist economy because of his hard work.

Criminal defendants facing drug charges are encouraged to seek assistance from qualified defense attorneys. These professionals can help you learn more about your legal rights and responsibilities, ensuring you are educated about the legal processes applicable to your case. A competent attorney can be an invaluable asset during arraignment, trial and sentencing hearings.
