KC Teens Accused of Killing Elderly Woman

A 17-year-old and another unnamed juvenile suspect have been detained in connection with the St. Patrick's Day stabbing of a 70-year-old woman. The pair is accused of breaking into the woman's home in Kansas City. They had intended to rob the home. The two suspects in the case could face juvenile crime charges, but it is also possible that they will be charged as adults. It appears that the victim in this case was stabbed more than 30 times.

The older teen has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and two additional counts of armed criminal action, according to local media reports. The juvenile is currently being detained at a local psychiatric facility. Official reports indicate that the young man had lived with the victim earlier in the year, but she forced him to move out in January.

The pair was staying at a shelter for homeless youth. They returned to the facility at about 5 a.m. after leaving around midnight, according to the center's records.

Authorities report that the woman was found in the morning by her husband, who slept in a different room. He discovered that several small electronic devices had been stolen from the home, as well, including a cell phone. One of the young men was located at a local school; he was allegedly carrying the stolen phone at the time of his arrest.

The older teen is being held on $250,000 bond.

It is possible that the older teen in this case will face charges as an adult. At age 17, it is likely that the young man knew the implications and consequences of his action. The age of the younger suspect has not yet been disclosed, however. He reportedly called 911 to have himself committed to a psychiatric facility. This information alone may indicate that the younger suspect was mentally ill at the time of the attack, or he may not have been capable of understanding the true consequences of the murder.
