Man Arrested After Chasing Girlfriend with Chainsaw

A 30-year-old man from Wichita, Kansas, is in custody today after facing charges in connection with an alleged domestic violence incident. The man will have to mount a criminal defense against the accusations, which state that the man fired several shots into the air before chasing his live-in girlfriend throughout the house with a running chainsaw.

Authorities report that the man had brandished a handgun at multiple people, ultimately firing six to eight shots in the air while he was at a party. He then returned to his house, where he got into a scuffle with his 36-year-old live-in girlfriend. He attempted to grab the woman's cell phone and she resisted, so he grabbed a chainsaw that had been sitting next to the couch.

Officers say the man activated the chainsaw and then chased the woman into the couple's bedroom. The woman sustained minor injuries during the altercation, though she did not appear to have been harmed by the chainsaw itself. Investigators at the man's home later determined that he had also been implicated in the earlier gunshot incident.

The man is currently in custody on a variety of charges that have not been delineated in media reports.

The suspect in this case ostensibly has a significant amount of evidence pointing to his misdeeds in court. It is possible, for example, that forensic evidence links him to the chainsaw use. In addition, several witnesses reportedly saw the man fire the gun into the air at the party.

Considering the mounting evidence against him in this case, the man's defense attorney may urge him to plead guilty to the charges he faces. He may be able to avoid felony charges if he enters a guilty plea and negotiates with prosecutors. The prosecuting attorneys will consider the man's previous criminal record to determine whether he will be eligible for a probation-based sentence rather than actual confinement. Suspects in this situation are strongly urged to consult with their attorneys to explore their legal options after arrest.
