K.C. man awaits extradition to Delaware for child porn

A 39-year-old Kansas City man is facing sex crimes charges in connection with alleged distribution and possession of child pornography. The man will be facing the charges in Delaware, according to media reports, because the investigator is based out of that state. Authorities from the Department of Homeland Security had assigned an undercover officer from Delaware to the man's case.

Authorities report that the man contacted the undercover agent with an offer to share child pornography through a file-sharing network. The investigator determined that the man was using an Internet connection at the library at Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley. The suspect came online during the afternoon of Feb. 14, and the undercover agent launched a raid on the library. Eleven agents from Homeland Security confronted the man in the library, where they found the man using his laptop.

Further analysis showed that the man had downloaded child porn videos just minutes before authorities arrived. The man admitted that he has been trading the images and videos for about 14 years, distributing the pornography every day since 1999, except for time that he spent in prison. Police said they found more than 850 contacts in the man's file-sharing network.

The suspect is a registered sex offender who was convicted of second-degree statutory sodomy in 2004. In this case, he faces one count of transporting child pornography in the state of Delaware. He will be extradited to that state to face legal action.

The man has admitted that he was responsible for creating and using the file-sharing network to distribute the child pornography. As a result, it is unlikely that he will be able to successfully enter a not-guilty plea. Rather, the man should consider pleading guilty to the charges. A plea bargain in this case could allow for a reduction in the severity of the charges he faces. Prosecutors could also show leniency in sentencing recommendations if the man formally admits to the crimes.
