Authorities unearth drugs, guns in local hotel

Officers investigating alleged crimes at a Kansas City motel reportedly discovered a cache of illegal drugs and weapons, along with something they did not expect: a toddler. Two people are facing drug charges in connection with the investigation, and the child has been taken into custody by the Department of Family Services.

Officials say they happened upon the alleged stores of illegal goods after being tipped off by a man who reported his cell phone stolen. He claimed that he had been drugged and robbed. Investigators traced the cell phone signal to the motel rooms, where they reportedly found much more than they anticipated.

The rooms were allegedly stocked with illegal drugs including black tar heroin and ecstasy. Drug paraphernalia was strewn throughout the premises, along with cell phones, computers, knives and loaded weapons. The toddler was found sleeping on the floor in one of the rooms, within easy reach of at least three loaded guns. Authorities discovered several propane tanks in the rooms as well. The gas was reportedly used in a pipe-making process.

Authorities say the occupants of the room turned a motel security camera on their doors so they could better monitor people who were visiting the premises.

Investigators say they are discovering a rising number of these mobile drug and weapons storage operations throughout the region. Eventually, they say, innocent bystanders are likely to be harmed because of an accidental explosion caused by chemical detonation. That violent crime could have a huge community impact.

Media reports have not released detailed information about charges pending against the two suspects. In this case, surveillance video evidence and cell phone records can be used to link the suspects to the room, which could provide solid evidence against the accused. Attorneys for the pair may encourage them to consider a guilty plea in order to reduce the serious charges that could be issued. A guilty plea would have a significant impact on the nature of the potential punishment in this case, especially if the suspects do not have an existing criminal record.
