Kansas City man's DNA linked him to sex crime

A 24-year-old man has been charged in connection with the rape of a 15-year-old girl in February. The man is accused of taking the girl from a residential playground and dragging her into a nearby townhouse to commit the sex crime. Reports indicate that the incident happened during the early morning hours on Feb. 16 in Kansas City.

Law enforcement officials say they have obtained DNA evidence that links the young man to the crime. He faces charges of forcible rape and statutory rape, and he is currently in custody because he has not paid the $250,000 bond required for release.

Incident reports show that the girl had been waiting for the bus so she could go to school.
The bus never arrived, so she believed that she had missed it, and she began to walk home.

When she stopped to tie her shoe, the man allegedly approached her, dragged her into a nearby building and repeatedly assaulted her. She was found on the playground by a maintenance man.

The girl was unable to identify her alleged attacker in a police lineup. However, in this case, it appears that authorities have built a fairly significant case against the suspect; DNA evidence is often difficult to dispute, particularly in rape situations and those involving other bodily fluids. It is likely that the DNA evidence was recovered from the girl's rape kit after the incident, or it may have been taken from her clothes or the scene itself.

It is unclear whether the man intends to plead guilty to the charges. Sex crime cases tend to be emotionally charged, and it would be very difficult for a jury to be truly objective when deciding the fate of someone who allegedly assaulted a child. Nevertheless, mistakes can happen when obtaining DNA evidence and the man's criminal defense attorney will more than likely review whether or not proper procedures were followed while conducting the tests.
