KC man arrested in connection with rape

A suspect has been arrested in connection with a recent sex crime in the Kansas City metro area. Little is known about the man, who is accused of breaking into a Bennington Avenue residence on Sept. 4, according to authorities.

Reports from the scene indicate that the woman called police at about 7:30 a.m. to report the incident. She had been getting ready to go to work when she was allegedly attacked by a man wearing a ski mask. The man is now accused of binding the woman, stealing her valuables and raping her before taking off in her car.

Officers say they noticed a car drive past the scene of the crime three times, which seemed suspicious. As a result, they arrested the man inside, who matched the general description of the criminal as provided by the victim. The victim's car was found in a nearby parking lot. Many of her valuables were still inside the vehicle. Officers say they are still searching for evidence inside the vehicle.

It is unclear whether any physical evidence connects the man arrested to the actual scene of the crime. Although he may have been acting suspiciously, officers may not have been entirely correct in arresting a curious passerby. Additionally, it is difficult to tell whether the man actually matched the woman's description, largely because his face was covered by a ski mask. The man could have been targeted simply because he matched the general height and build of the woman's attacker.

In cases such as this one, the most significant evidence will come from genetic material left behind either in the woman's car or at the scene of the attack. Right now, much of the evidence is circumstantial, relying on witness testimony rather than actual science. If the suspect's genetic material matches remnants left in either location, officers and prosecutors may be able to build a stronger case.
