Man charged with drunk driving following traffic crash

A Johnson County judge recently set an unusually high bond for a Missouri man with numerous prior drunk driving convictions.

The 50-year-old Branson, Missouri, man was charged with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and fleeing from a law enforcement officer. During the man's initial hearing, the judge set his bond at $100,000 and he remains in jail.

According to media reports, the 50-year-old man has been convicted for drinking and driving at least 14 times. The man is also on probation in Taney County, Missouri, for a theft conviction, court records indicate.

While the man currently lives in Branson, he once lived in the Kansas City area, according to court records. During that time, he was in and out of prison in both Missouri and Kansas. He was convicted for DUI in Johnson County at least twice, and for DWI in Jackson County at least four times.

In the most recent case, the man was arrested May 14, 2012, in Overland Park after he was involved in a traffic accident. Police initially responded to the intersection of 103rd Street and Antioch Road after receiving reports that a man armed with a knife was threatening another man.

When police officers arrived on the scene, the 50-year-old man was gone. However, he allegedly drove up a few minutes later. The officers reported the man fled from them when they tried to question him.

The man took off on U.S. Highway 69, and lost control of his 1998 Ford Taurus when he tried to exit onto 103rd Street, according to reports from the Kansas Highway Patrol. After he lost control, the man's vehicle hit a sign and rolled, accident reports indicate. Fortunately, he was not seriously injured in the crash.

The situation the man faces is a serious one. Because of his numerous prior convictions, he has a high bond and may be forced to remain in jail until his case is resolved.
