Wichita teacher charged with sexual assaulting girl

A 32-year-old Kansas teacher was arrested earlier this month in Wichita, and charged with sexually assaulting a young girl. The school district where he works has placed him on administrative leave.

The man is being held in jail on suspicion of four counts of rape, and one count of electronic solicitation of a child, and two counts of indecent liberties with a child. He has not been formally charged. The Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office will review the case against the man and determine whether to file formal charges.

According to jail records, the circumstances surrounding the assault are unknown in three of the four alleged rapes. The fourth rape count alleges the man had "sexual intercourse without consent and use of force." Indecent liberties with a child occur when the "offender believes" the child is older than 14, but younger than 16.

A spokesman for the Wichita Police Department's Wichita-Sedgwick County Exploited and Missing Child Unit says police believe the man assaulted a young girl between Jan. 2, 2010, and Feb. 1, 2012. All of the alleged offenses took place in Sedgwick County, police say.

On Feb. 29, 2012, the girl's mother told police the man had touched her 15-year-old daughter inappropriately. Police say the investigation is on going.

According to media reports, the man lives in Lawrence, Kansas, and currently teaches English at Eudora High School in Eudora, Kansas. Prior to this school year, the man taught English at East High School in Wichita from August 2006 to July 2011. While at East High School, he was the boys' and girls' assistant cross country coach in 2004 and 2005.

According to a spokesperson from Wichita school district, none of the alleged offenses occurred on school property. The Eudora school officials notified parents one of the school's teachers had been arrested in Sedgwick County for an "improper relationship" with a minor. The school district said as far as it knows the teacher has not behaved inappropriately with a student from Eudora.

Charges such as the ones this teacher faces can have a lasting impact on your career, not to mention freedom. Even if the charges are proved to be false, the mere suggestion that the man was involved in a sex crime with a student can end his future employment opportunities.
