Man sought for raping 71-year-old woman

Kansas City Police are looking for a man who allegedly attacked a 71-year-old woman earlier this month. According to police reports, the man repeatedly assaulted the woman in her apartment in the 3200 block of East 10th St. The attack allegedly included numerous incidents of rape and sodomy.

The woman told police officers she went into her kitchen for a drink of water about 7:30 p.m. after waking up from a nap in her living room chair. When she entered the kitchen, the man allegedly was hiding beside her refrigerator.

He allegedly told her if she cooperated with the sexual assault, he would not hurt her. According to police reports, he spent the next four hours raping her and sodomizing the elderly woman. Police allege the man also took pictures of the woman during the attack.

About 1:35 a.m., six hours later, the woman was treated for possible internal injuries at a local hospital.

A police artist created a sketch of the man. The woman says the man who attacked her is a "wiry" black man. The man is thought to be about 6 feet tall and weigh between 165 and 175 pounds. The alleged victim estimates he is between 35 and 40 years of age. The woman says he has brown eyes, a mustache and a goatee. The 71-year-old woman describes the man as bald, but says he wore a cloth made of black silk around his head. She told police he has a low voice and was soft-spoken. He also has two distinctive scars on his left arm. The woman told the police artist it looked as if the man had burned his arm.

While attacks like this are definitely tragic, it is important that throughout the investigation and identification process that all suspects are processed fairly. Not every person brought in for questioning is guilty and it is essential that their rights be preserved every step of the way.
